THE ROOTS OF WAR
July 24, 2006

The Israeli bombing and invasion of Lebanon is the third in the series of conflicts that future historians will call "the Bush Wars," but it's not fair to blame only George and George W. Bush for the destruction of world peace, of the United States and perhaps of civilization. The Bush family will take the blame for the series of wars that will wrack the world for the next fifty years or so but they are just figureheads, and tools of the American Military Industrial Complex that is the enemy of all humanity.

THE LANGUAGE OF SHAKESPEARE, CAPTAIN KIRK, AND HYPERPLASMOID GOOBLEWOOFERS
date -- about 1991

A light-hearted look at the evolution of English as a global language. I wrote this in my pocket notebook, in a Macdonald's in the town of Krefeld, in Germany, and I've always liked it.

TRUE HAPPINESS
date -- early 1980's

This is another oldie -- an attempt to find a biological basis for happiness. It's an abstract argument, but interesting -- and it contains some original ideas that never made it into the mainstream.

THE INTELLECTUAL FALLACY
date -- about 2002

Many Canadians think that a university education will help them make more money, and that the more university graduates we have the more prosperity we will have.

Both beliefs are pleasing and profitable to the educational establishment, but dead wrong and a disaster for Canada. The fact is that most of our modern economy is based on the work of people like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers and others who had little school learning, but who knew how to make things.

We already have more university education than the United States and much more than powerhouse high-tech economies like Germany and Sweden, but we are sadly lacking in trades training and in skilled tradesmen.

Some of this is a rip-off from my book We Need to Talk. The complete book is available on this website.

CANADA'S WAR IN AFGHANISTAN

Why are Canadians surprised that our soldiers are being killed in Afghanistan? For all the pretense that we are trying to "reconstruct" the country the fact is that our soldiers are there to crush the Afghans' resistance to the American conquest and occupation.

But the last foreigner to conquer Afghanistan was Alexander the Great and, in recent historic times, the Afghans beat off British and Russian occupying armies that were far better armed, (relatively speaking) than our "peace-keepers" and who were not held back by the pretense that they were friends.

Both common sense and justice demand that we get out now, and apologize to the Afghans for our role as flunkies of the Americans.
